Main tasks:

  • This role is responsible for the solution architecture (business, application, information, and integration technology), software engineering leadership during project delivery and ongoing maintenance of regional digital platform(s). To be successful in the role, the candidate will possess not only deep expertise in their particular field, but also superior relationship management, coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Establishes and delivers regional applications/platforms via Vietnam, Philippines and Hong Kong IT and utilizing Vietnam DXC and Philippines Manulife Competency Centre MCC.
  • Vietnam DXC: Ensures robust ADM & solution architecture practices are in place, including: incident management, enhancements, work request and project throughput and quality assurance processes via technical design, unit testing & code reviews and automated testing services.
  • Maximizes the reuse of Digital technology, solutions & skills across Manulife Asia (particularly SE Asia markets) to achieve cost efficiencies utilising Agile, DevOps, repeatable technical playbooks and collaborative IT process automation practices.
  • Travels within Asia to meet multi-regional digital delivery, support, leadership and project responsibilities

General Accountability:

  • Provide solution architecture direction, engineering leadership, consultancy and support to the business operations and project teams in the delivery of the Regional Projects.
  • Ensure the robustness/flexibility of the design to enable the effective delivery of a regional solution across multiple markets in a cost/time optimized manner utilizing repeatable technical playbooks and sound engineering design.
  • Drives effective management of resources to drive resolution of identified project issues and risks, and gains internal / external buy-in that risks and issues are effectively mitigated within desired tolerance levels
  • Enhances and accelerates projects
  • Ensures logical and physical architecture for a project aligns with the standards and reference architectures defined by the Technical Domain and Enterprise Architects.
  • Regularly reviews business strategy and current technical capabilities to support the development of reference architecture documents, strategic roadmaps, and the evaluation of current and future systems, operational models, as well as total cost of ownership.
  • Provides leadership founded on strong and deep technical experience.
  • Develops and fosters relationships with the divisional and business unit subject matter experts
  • Coaches, mentors and supports system development teams in implementing reference architectures and standards
  • Communicates the Solution Architectures to senior management and development teams through deliverables, presentations, training and other appropriate means and forums
  • Works with Technical Domain and Enterprise architects to develop comprehensive solution architecture
  • Works with Solution Designers to incorporate product/platform architecture into solution maps
  • Works closely with project teams to drive alignment with enterprise blueprints
  • Ensures project compliance with the approved technology roadmap and associated blueprints, standards, and techniques
  • Actively participates in appropriate Enterprise Architecture governance bodies
  • Creates systems architectures that implement business capabilities as defined in the Business Architecture
  • Creates phased implementation architectures that deliver on the future state according to business priorities
  • Identifies architectural issues and risks and, if necessary, escalate them in a timely manner
  • Participates in the selection of vendor products and technologies
  • Assists in the development of technical design and physical architectures, emphasizing reuse and integration opportunities
  • Ensures that risks are appropriately identified, prioritized and mitigated to levels acceptable for management
  • Collaborates effectively with distributed IS teams in Canada, US and Asia
  • Fosters development of business solutions and strategic business opportunities
  • Application Architecture
  • Acts in the role of Vietnam COE (Vietnam Center of Excellence) Application Architect working with DXC and Manulife Technical Leads to appropriately manage the application lifecycle of the platforms as deployed in the Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore markets.
  • Provides regional scale while optimizing digital application development, maintenance, quality assurance (testing) and delivery services across Asia portfolios.
  • Services Regional CIO’s project and runs portfolios with effective application architecture and engineering services.
  • Interacts and develops strong collaborative communication/relationships with key regional Business & IT leaders and Service providers to ensure transparency on key application service activities and practices.
  • People Management& Leadership
  • Provides leadership and management to Manulife and Service provider(s) ADM resources across various geographies (Manila and Vietnam) to deliver and exceed on growth expectations, profitability, operating targets and to maximize shareholder value.

Domain-Specific Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience with the following will be advantageous:
  • Knowledge and/or experience of Microservice, Mobile, Cloud first and API based architectures
  • Enterprise Service Bus messaging services
  • Sales Force Platform
  • Web Architecture & Web Services
  • Java/.NET Development
  • Microsoft platforms & technologies
  • Microsoft Azure
  • SQL (Oracle or Microsoft)
  • Open systems platforms & technologies


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 2+ years of Solution Architecture experience
  • 5+ years of Application Architecture experience
  • 5+ years of broad Insurance experience
  • 5+ years of experience in project delivery & Software Development Life Cycle (SLDC)
  • 5+ years’ experience with e-business, digital and partner integration programs
  • Experience and / or certification in Agile Software Development Methodology
  • Extensive experience dealing with third parties including management of an offshore ADM center
  • Experience working with remote/geographically dispersed teams including extensive travel
  • Experience with Insurance customer channels including: Direct, Affinity, Agents, Brokers, GI and Bancassurance
  • Experience in Application development, design & integration
  • A deep understanding of the insurance industry, key principles of business and competitive strategy, and evolving digital and societal trends
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance business, systems, and processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of Digital, emerging and disruptive technology applications
  • Strong awareness of developing IT/insurance & cross industry/competitor trends (applications, delivery models, new technology concepts etc.)
  • Appreciation of cultural differences across the Asia region
