Agile transformation is a core part of the DELTA transformation at Manulife. Our DELTA portfolio provides project, program and portfolio management capability to help execute against our Regional Strategy in Asia, including Manulife DELTA. We focus on attracting top talent and assigning them to some of our most complex global and regional programs, and we are now recruiting an experienced and highly motivated Agile Coach. The Agile Coach will work with the Head of Agile Asia to develop the agile adoption strategies, implement agile methodologies and lead cross functional teams to continually deliver business value through IT and Business initiatives. Working as an advisor, the role provides leadership, coaching and direction to all stakeholders, leading the identification and implementation of agile.

Job Summary:

The Agile Coach will be relied upon to lead by example, and build a high performing team, by proving hands-on team guidance, managing intrapersonal conflicts, challenges and identifying opportunities for growth. The focus of the role will be on both software development, and changing the way we work across business as usual functions within the Manulife Asia Region. This role will support multiple Agile initiatives concurrently.

  • Work with the Head of Agile, Asia to establish an agile practice, performing and establishing Agile capabilities in Regional Office, South East Asia and other Countries within the Asia Region. 
  • Agile Coaching at the team, program, portfolio and senior stakeholder levels of the organization
  • Working with leadership teams to adopt consistent, disciplined Agile delivery capabilities
  • Supporting, educating and coaching the Product Owner, especially with respect to grooming and maintaining the product backlog.
  • Supporting, educating and coaching the ScrumMaster, especially with respect to helping Pod team members achieve optimum efficiency and facilitating agile ceremonies.
  • Supporting, educating and coaching Project Managers and Business Analysts as we transition from Waterfall to Agile ways of working.
  • Supporting, educating and coaching the remaining members of the Agile Pod teams and supporting teams in order to effectively deliver an agile project. 
  • Thorough hands-on collaboration, provide guidance to teams on establishment and continuous improvement of consistent, disciplined Agile delivery capability
  • Identify risks, issues and impediments to our Agile Transformation and either manage these or escalate for resolution.
  • Instill agile values and principles - ensure adherence to Agile methodology including sprint ceremonies (stand-ups, demos, retrospectives), road-mapping and release planning, backlog management (definition, grooming, prioritization), sizing, task estimation and velocity tracking
  • Identify plans to transition supported Agile Pods from Agile coaching to self-sufficient Agile Pods.
  • Develop in conjunction with the Head of Agile, Asia Technology Office and the User Experience team a compelling training program to drive Manulife's Agile Transformation
  • Work with other supporting areas of Manulife such as Strategic Project Management Office (SPMO), Human Resources, Risk, Compliance, Asia Technology Office and others to review and improve supporting processes which need to change to support the Agile transformation. 
  • Actively contribute to the global Agile Delivery practices and community
  • Work with other coaches to deliver consistent Agile practices across the organisation

  • University Degree in IT or Business with a minimum of 3 years' experience working as an Agile Coach, Scrum Master, Agile delivery lead and / or Iteration Manager
  • Extensive delivery experience as a Scrum Master
  • Scrum certified (CSM / PSM / CSPO / PSPO) or other agile certifications (SAFe for instance) will be beneficial
  • Clear knowledge of a variety of agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, etc.)
  • Strong collaboration, facilitation and conflict management experience
  • Proven experience in managing dependencies with non-agile teams
  • Proven experience delivering activity-based classroom training
  • Ability to work with non-technical and non-delivery stakeholders to create agile champions in all areas of the business
  • Ability to engage with leadership and management teams to drive agile enablement and overcome common adoption challenges
  • Experience in coaching common agile estimation techniques (planning poker through to time-based estimation)
  • Proven experience in driving well-structured agile requirements
  • Proven experience in coaching Product Owners and Business Analysts on Product Backlog refinement (priority and requirement changes/additions)
  • Experience working with distributed teams and third-party vendor teams
  • Understanding of how common delivery practices such as UAT can work in an agile environment
  • Familiarity with common agile tools such as JIRA and BluePrint
  • Familiarity with common DevOps processes and tools such as Bitbucket, Git, Jenkins, HPQC
  • Must be able to communicate well with all levels of the organization from Scrum team members to executives 
  • Must be able to facilitate, lead and demonstrate value-add principles to a team 
  • Must be assertive to ensure Agile/Scrum concepts and principles are adhered to, must be able to be a voice of reason and authority, make the tough calls
  • Must have an attitude of empowerment to be able to lead a team to self-organization 
  • Must be a Quick learner, able to quickly gain a high level understanding of the technical and business domains of the Scrum teams
