Job Description Summary:
The Practice Manager leads a team of ~20 - 30 developers who work on various software delivery projects within our Institutional Technology portfolio.  S/he works in close collaboration with our Solution Delivery Leads, providing skilled personnel to meet various project requirements.  The Practice Manager is also responsible for aligning and contributing to development practices (tools, templates, processes, etc.) within the broader Manulife organization.
Job Description:
The Practice Manager plays a key role in our multi-geography Institutional Technology team.  This person will collaborate regularly with fellow Practice Managers in the same discipline, as well as other disciplines (e.g.: Analysis, Project Management, QA) and with other IS leaders within their area and across Canada. 
This position would be a great match for someone who enjoys achieving results by enabling individuals and teams.
Institutional Technology and Manulife at large embrace workplace mobility and remote collaboration; therefore, this position may have some remote direct reports and/or collaborate regularly with remote colleagues.  Some travel may be required periodically.
Key Responsibilities:
While managing a large practice of ~20-30 developers, the Practice Manager will be responsible for: 
  • Hiring, retention and succession planning
  • Performance management
  • Optimizing employee and contractor allocation across a wide variety of projects
  • Partnering with Solution Delivery Leads and the Commercial Office to achieve optimal business outcomes
  • Ensuring development tools and processes support successful software deliveries
  • Ensuring practice is prepared to meet evolving capacity & capability needs; addressing any gaps
  • Ensuring permanent and contingent workforce are following IS and development processes consistently
  • Managing employee skills & career development
  • Supporting & improving best practices that align within the wider Manulife organization
  • Staying abreast of the development industry and facilitating innovation
  • Managing expenses and investments to budget
  • Producing, maintaining and executing annual practice roadmap / business plan
  • Building business cases where needed, to move the practice forward
  • Championing various initiatives with both employees and fellow leaders

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a management role with direct reports, which includes at least 3 years managing developers
  • At least 5 years’ previous experience as a software developer
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in an IS/IT environment
  • Familiarity with SDLC
  • Experience helping others solve business and/or technical challenges as a team
  • Experience learning new systems/tools/processes and sharing knowledge
  • Previous experience in medium-large scale software delivery is an asset
  • Previous experience in a strong matrix environment is an asset
  • Experience in agile software development is an asset
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required
  • Fluency in French (written and spoken) is considered an asset
