Key Focus:
The position leads a team responsible for producing timely and accurate financial information relating to highly complex affiliate and external reinsurance treaties. Specific accountabilities include calculating and initiating treaty settlements, recording results, and explaining results of operations to internal and external stakeholders.   Additionally, the position performs capital analysis and provides other support for new reinsurance treaties and treaty recaptures. The Director, Reinsurance Accounting is also accountable for identifying, developing and recommending process improvements, focusing on standardization, collaboration and innovative thinking. 
Key Responsibilities: 
  • Manage department of 4 reinsurance accountants with accountability for approximately 25 coinsurance and modified coinsurance treaties
  • Review or calculate treaty settlements and other treaty balances like embedded derivatives and ensure results are properly recorded in the general ledger
  • Oversee and initiate settlements and cession statements with reinsurance counterparties
  • Produce financial statements and explain treaty results to stakeholders including senior management, reinsurance counterparties, and regulators
  • Ensure treaties are adequately collateralized and comply with regulatory requirements and treaty terms
  • Compile regulatory reports and filings and reinsurance related footnotes
  • Collaborate with IT, Actuarial, and Investments to manage changes in systems and process to ensure timeliness and integrity of financial data necessary to calculate and record treaty activity
  • Participate in the development of treaty agreements or amendments and design accounting models to record new treaties and treaty recaptures under different accounting standards
  • Maintain appropriate supporting documentation for all transactions
  • Maintain an effective control environment with control and process documentation, assist with internal and external audits
  • Focus on key initiatives and process improvements
  • Develop and coach staff to build a strong, dynamic and highly motivated team
Knowledge, Skills, Competencies: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA required
  • Advanced knowledge of reinsurance concepts and accounting standards under US Statutory Accounting Principles and IFRS
  • 10+ years of accounting/finance experience
  • 3+ years of reinsurance accounting and reporting experience
  • Prior supervisory experience and project management experience preferred but not required
  • Understanding of risks and controls
  • Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must be a team player, self-starter, well-organized, innovative, and possess a high level of initiative
  • Comfortable working with senior levels of management and able to cope in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and establish priorities to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work in a complex financial environment
  • Big picture perspective with strong attention to detail
  • Exercise and demonstrate sound professional judgment
